Partita la Rolex Giraglia 2018! 80 barche sulla linea di partenza della regata Sanremo-Saint Tropez

Allo scoccare della mezzanotte verrà sparato il primo colpo di cannone della Rolex Giraglia 2018, che darà il via alla regata Sanremo-Saint Tropez. Grande fermento sulle banchine dello Yacht Club Sanremo in vista delle miglia che separano le due cittadine costiere. Dalle 18.00 briefing degli skipper, cocktail in banchina e i fuochi d’artificio alle 22.30 a salutare gli equipaggi.

Sessanta saranno infatti le miglia da coprire nella prova diretta su Saint Tropez, in vista delle regate costiere che cominceranno domenica 10. 80 le barche iscritte, buone le previsioni meteo: atteso vento da SW moderato, che dovrebbe spingere la flotta abbastanza celermente verso la Francia.Intanto a Saint Tropez la macchina organizzativa è a tutto vapore in vista dell’arrivo di tutti i partecipanti che stanno iniziando ad affollare le banchine della cittadina provenzale. Il tetris per l’ormeggio di tutta la flotta (236 imbarcazioni) che parteciperà alla Rolex Giraglia 2018, si sta rivelando impegnativo, per via del crescente numero di Maxi Yacht con pescaggio e dimensioni sempre più importanti. La lunghezza totale delle barche iscritte, in metri lineari, è di circa 3,4 chilometri!L’edizione 2018 è particolarmente sentita anche perché coincide con il ventesimo compleanno della partnership tra Yacht Club Italiano e Rolex, collaborazione che ha portato al successo di una regata che dal 1953 ha saputo rinnovarsi pur mantenendo inalterato il fascino. Quella che nacque come ‘crociera d’altura’ come si chiamavano allora, è diventata un evento iconico. La navigazione compendia tecnica e poesia e negli anni si attesta come una sorta di maturità velica. Ancora oggi, per molti appassionati, ‘L’ho fatta anche io’ diventa una medaglia importante sul petto di ogni marinaio.Negli anni sono aumentati i partenti in maniera inversamente proporzionale ai tempi di percorrenza. Mentre il tempo più basso appartiene allo yacht Esimit Europa 2 di Igor Simcic che nel 2012 brucia il record precedente con un tempo di 14 ore, 56 minuti e 16 secondi. Ma per i record, c’è tempo fino alla partenza della lunga di mercoledì.Dopo la Sanremo – St. Tropez dunque appuntamento a Saint Tropez per 3 giorni di intense e combattute regate costiere, con le flotte divise su 2 campi di regata: i bastoni davanti alle spiagge di Pampelonne, (per le barche più grandi, ovvero il Gruppo 0), e le costiere tra le boe naturali del Golfo di Saint Tropez per quelle più ‘piccole’ (Gruppi A e B).LA ROLEX GIRAGLIALa Giraglia fu ideata in 1953 come una regata d’altura di 241mn. The Rolex Giraglia 2018 has started! 80 boats on the start line for the Sanremo-Saint Tropez race

On the stroke of midnight, the first starting gun of the Rolex Giraglia 2018 will be fired, marking the start of the Sanremo-Saint Tropez race. Great excitement on the quays of the Sanremo Yacht Club before the miles that separate the two coastal cities. Skippers’ briefing at 6 PM, cocktails on the quayside and fireworks at 10:30 PM to salute the crews.

There will be 60 miles to cover to Saint Tropez, then will come the coastal races starting on Sunday 10^th. There are 80 boats entered and the forecast is good: a moderate south-westerly breeze should take the fleet towards France at a fair rate of knots.

Meanwhile in Saint Tropez the organising machine is going full steam ahead to prepare for the arrival of all the participants who are beginning to crowd the quaysides of this city in Provence. The jigsaw puzzle for mooring the entire fleet (236 yachts) that will take part in the Rolex Giraglia 2018 is proving tricky because of the growing number of maxi yachts with increasingly significant draughts and dimensions. The overall length of the yachts entered is about 3.4 km!

The 2018 edition is particularly important also because it coincides with the 20^th anniversary of the partnership between the Yacht Club Italiano and Rolex, a collaboration that has ensured the success of a regatta that since 1953 has innovated while maintaining its fascination intact.

What began as a “deepwater cruise”, as it was known then, has become an iconic event. The regatta combines technique and poetry and over the years has established itself as a kind of “sailing finals”. Still today, for many sailing enthusiasts, “I’ve done it too” is an important medal pinned to the chest of every yachtsman.

Over the years the number of entries has increased in inverse proportion to the time taken to sail the race. The fastest time was set by Igor Simcic’s yacht Esimit Europa 2, which in 2012 shattered the previous record with a time of 14 hours, 56 minutes and 16 seconds.

But for the records will have to wait until the start of the long race on Wednesday.

So, after the Sanremo – St. Tropez race, the appointment is in Saint Tropez for three days of intense and hard-fought coastal races, with the fleets split between two racecourses: windward/leeward off the beaches of Pampelonne (for the bigger boats in Group 0) and coastal races between the natural marks of the Gulf of Saint Tropez for their smaller sisters (Groups A and B).
THE ROLEX GIRAGLIA
The Giraglia was conceived in 1953 as a 241 mile offshore race. Since then it has grown and today it includes a race from Sanremo and three days of coastal races in the gulf of Saint Tropez. In 2018 this classic race celebrates its 66th anniversary. The RG is organised by the Yacht Club Italiano with the collaboration of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the Yacht Club Sanremo and the Yacht Club de France. Rolex has been a partner of the Rolex Giraglia since 1998 and this year celebrates 20 years of collaboration with the Yacht Club Italiano.
